On 24 December 1979, Ariane made its first flight from French Guiana, marking the beginning of 30 years of success and giving Europe a guaranteed independent access to space. With Ariane, ESA could develop its own programmes in many different domains: telecommunications, Earth observation, science and exploration. Europe was the pioneer in the civil launch space market, with the creation of Arianespace, the world-leading space transportation company.

Planck is ESA's 'time machine', Europe's first mission to study the relic radiation from the Big Bang. Using it astronomers will be able to see back in time, towards the beginning of space and time as we know it.

Whether it's Star Trek's USS Enterprise, or the iconic space station from 2001: A Space Odyssey, science fiction has always provided inspiration and ideas for the scientists and engineers that design and build real spacecraft. The, at times, fine line between science fiction literature and the developments in real life space activities provides the backdrop to ESA's latest Space-in-Bytes video lesson release, titled "Science fiction - science fact".

ESA's Mars Express found layers of water ice and dust at the Martian north pole, and crater containing water ice. The ice is definitely frozen water since carbon dioxide ice had already disappeared from the north polar cap at the time the images were taken (late summer).

The International Space Station (ISS) depends on regular deliveries of experimental equipment and spare parts as well as food, air and water for its permanent crew. From early 2008 onward, Europe's Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) will be one of the indispensable ISS supply spaceships. After launch, the ATV is well protected at the top of Ariane 5 during a three-minute, high-pressure aerodynamic ascent; 100 minutes after lift-off, ATV becomes a fully automatic spacecraft navigating toward the International Space Station (ISS). The ATV uses its laser-guided rendezvous sensors to dock precisely and safely with the ISS, becoming a working extension of the Station. The 45 m³ pressurised module can deliver up to 7.7 tonnes of equipment, fuel, food, water and air for the crew, and it will also be used to raise the ISS altitude, which naturally decreases over time due to residual atmospheric drag. After 6 months, ATV, loaded with 6.4 tonnes of waste, separates from the ISS and burns up during a guided and controlled re-entry high over the Pacific Ocean.

For its Introduction video, ESA chose a piece of music called 'The Reaktor Song', by a German band called Eclipse Sol-Air. Complementing the images, the solo violin and piano evoke the pioneering history of European exploration, then the contemporary bass and drums capture the excitement of modern-day exploration and advanced technology.
