SkySails ist ein eingetragener Markenname des gleichnamigen Hamburger Unternehmens SkySails GmbH & Co. KG für einen vollautomatischen Zugdrachenantrieb, der mit Hilfe von Windenergie Frachtschiffe, große Yachten und Fischtrawler zusätzlich zum Motorantrieb ziehen soll. Mit diesem System ausgestattete Schiffe sollen profitabler und umweltfreundlicher betrieben werden können.

    Das SkySails-Antriebssystem ist nur möglich mit Hilfe aktueller Werkstoffe:

    hochfeste und witterungsbeständige Textilien für den Zugdrachen mit bis zu 320 m2 Fläche
    hochreißfeste Kunststoffseile für die enormen Zugkräfte bis zu 5 Tonnen.

    Genutzt werden kann diese Technik aber nur durch elektronische Steuerungssysteme:

    Das Start- und Landesystem auf dem Vorschiff übernimmt das automatische Ausbringen und Einholen des Zugdrachens.

    Je nach Windverhältnissen und Fahrtrichtung wird der Lenkdrachen auf eine Flughöhe zwischen 100 und 300 Metern gebracht und durch dynamischen Flug, z.B. in Form einer "8", erzeugen SkySails im Vergleich zu normalen Segeln pro Quadratmeter Fläche dann die zwei- bis dreifache Vortriebskraft.
